SIMON BALESTRAZZI

"Ultrasonic Bathing Apparatus" CD
REVIEWS

THE SOUND PROJECTOR
by Ed Pinsent
Another grand piece of sombre, rich drone music from Italian latterday Industrial creator Simon Balestrazzi. His Ultrasonic Bathing Apparatus (SINCOPE SIN031) proposes a deep dive into cold psychological waters, and with its titles such as ‘First Immersion’ and ‘Second Immersion’ even supplies its own metaphorical interpretation, such that we can’t help hearing this as “music for the diving chamber”. He does it with a combination of field recordings, tapes, acoustic instruments and analogue electronic devices, passing all the recorded results over the loom of processing equipment which he keeps in NeuroHabitat – a zone which I presume is his secret underground mixing lair. The claustrophobic sense of deep pressure and airlessness he manages to achieve at times is impressive. A nice departure from the usual spirit world / occult themed records we usually hear from this fellow.

FOREIGN ACCENTS

by Matthew Sweeney
Here’s one from March you hopefully did not miss: Ultrasonic Bathing Appartus, off Italy’s Sincope Recordings, is the latest offering from highly prolific Italian electro-acoustic/industrial veteran Simon Balestrazzi, an alumni of the eclectic experimenters T.A.C. as well as a long list of collaborations with Maurizio Bianchi, Phil Niblock, and Damo Suzuki, among many others.
Within the first few seconds of the low-frequency drone of the opener, “First Immersion”, the stage has been set for just under three-quarters of an hour of suffocating isolationist soundscapes. Though Sara Daresu’s tabletop guitar and Balestrazzi’s warbling voice (among other tools) add some scurrying, frantic textures to brief interludes like “Osmosis”, this sonic landscape is centered on the slow embrace of ominous lower-register sounds. Ultrasonic Bathing Apparatus could be the soundtrack to the final moments before an apocalypse, like the silence in the shadow of a tidal wave looming in the distance. Creepy musique-concrète of an epic scope, and certainly among the essential deep-listening of the year.

VITAL WEEKLY #978

by JKH
Simon Balestrazzi from Italy is active since 1981 and his releases are well balanced and composed with a great attention to atmosphere. The CD “Ultrasonic Bathing Apparatus” released by the Italian label Sincope is again a beauty. The album starts quietly with drony sounds. Some field-recordings and voices give a natural atmosphere to the ambient atmosphere. The second track has a more open character by on-going fragmentary rhythmical sounds. The base is meditative and sounds created by table top guitar, horizontal steel cello and prepared toy psaltery disturb subtle the quiet mood. I can describe every track, but most of the track have this duality. The searching for quietness and introspection and the disturbance by sounds and influences from outside. Most of the tracks have a drony and ambient character. Exceptions are the tracks between the so-called “Immersions”. The three tracks have more an experimental character and have been played by prepared piano, a broken metronome, cello, toys and lots more. Maurizio Saiu with overtone singing and Sara Aresu have assisted him on tabletop guitar. The last release of Sincope has also a more professional attitude by the beautiful artwork and cover by Truculentboy. Anyhow a beautiful album for lovers of experimental and drony ambient music.

MUSIQUE MACHINE
by Hal Harmon
Italian imprint Sincope presents Ultrasonic Bathing Apparatus, the latest full-length CD by Simon Balestrazzi. Balestrazzi is a long-running sound artist and composer and leading figure in the italian post-industrial scene. During the 80’s and early 90’s, Balestrazzi was active in groups T.A.C. (Tomografia Assiale Computerizzata), Kino Glaz, and Kirlian Camera. His lengthy resume also includes collaborations with: Damo Suzuki, TH26, Uncodified, VipCancro, Z’EV, and Francesco Paladino to name a few. Along with his solo work, Balestrazzi is currently active with groups: Dream Weapon Ritual, Candor Chasma, Sarang and the improv ensemble A Sphere Of Simple Green. Yes, he seems like a busy guy. Ultrasonic Bathing Apparatus offers 7 tracks that employs: analog synthesizers, field recordings, electroacoustic sounds, tabletop guitar (by Sara Aresu), voice (by Maurizio Saiu), digital processing, and a myriad of other instruments and processes to create a dense, immersive audio experience. The album’s concepts of sensory deprivation and numbness are sonically achieved through some dense, speaker-rumbling drones (which lay the foundation for the albums 4 “Immersion” tracks). “First Immersion” offers a focused drone of dense pulses, metal clanging, obscured voices, and other synthy oddities. Listening to this piece I couldn’t help but imagine a spaceship drifting through space, a control panel teaming with sound, the crew’s only contact with humanity are a series of random radio transmissions. The “Second Immersion” focuses on hollow echoes and bright drifting resonance that verges on piercing. Strangely, as the piece progresses it takes on an Asian vibe. The use of a dulcimer takes the track in a direction that almost sounds like the instrument plucking found on a kung fu film score. The “Third Immersion” takes cues from the first, adding some static crackle, muffled voices, and banging (that sounded like doors shutting). The “Final Immersion” sounds like a storm is brewing. It never quite achieves full on thunder and lighting, but rather occupies that slow buildup to the storm. Each of the “Immersions” offer, well ...quite an immersive listening experience. These 4 pieces should appeal to those who like their sounds slow and steady and heavily meditative. The rest of the album is filled up with shorter pieces. I particularly enjoyed “Oscillation” and “Osmosis” which feature Sara Aresu on the tabletop guitar.
I’ve been a close follower of the Sincope imprint and I’d say they’ve got another winner with Ultrasonic Bathing Apparatus. Truthfully, despite the resume, I’ll admit my ignorance of Balestrazzi’s body of work. However, if this album is any indication, it might be time for me to do something about that.

RUMORE #282/283 Luglio/Agosto 2015
by Andrea Prevignano
An excellent performance by simon Balestrazzi (ex T.A.C. and Kirlian Kamera). Ultrasonic Bathing Apparatus creates at listening a physical and psychological significant tension, through what are called by Balestrazzi immersions in sensorial deprivation soundscapes. A work full of timbres, that alongside the usual analog electronics it places salterio, steel cello, bulbul tarang. Alienating esoteric electronics. 8/10

DISTORSIONI
by Rimina Baldoni
Apoteosi catartica senza eguali.

HEATHEN HARVEST
by Kate MacDonald
I suspect this album might be a bit confusing for those who have just a little familiarity with the career of Simon Balestrazzi. I say that because this is about as far as one can get from the projects for which he is best known, namely Kirlian Camera and the closely related T.A.C. Ultrasonic Bathing Apparatus is the artist at his most experimental, closer to the world of musique concrete than to the dark pop sensibilities of the former or oneiric soundscapes of the latter.
For those who have not heard of Balestrazzi in any of his numerous guises, of course, this album is a clean slate. And for those who have followed his lengthy career closely, this will come as little surprise. Balestrazzi began his career in music when he walked away from formal instruction as a teenager and chose to explore the world of his own imagination, even building instruments to create the sounds he wanted. This is not his first foray into the world of experimental minimalism and will almost certainly not be his last.
The metaphor of a “clean slate” that I used earlier is appropriate here: the music is pristine and so minimal for some stretches that it hovers on the threshold of hearing. This is headphone music for certain, because the quiet drones and pulses have a depth to them that is not apparent without close concentration and in a setting where there are other sounds to distract, like the racket of people around you breathing.
There is a surprising number of instruments used to create such quiet, ranging from analogue electronics to eastern acoustic instruments to a steel cello to a broken metronome, with field recordings sprinkled liberally throughout. Thus is the effort it takes to listen to this in isolation rewarded: what sounds very thin and minimal to the casual listener (not that I can see this being the kind of music one would throw on during a dinner party anyway) has a surprising amount packed into it.
Ultrasonic Bathing Apparatus benefits from an excellent recording job, a necessity in this sort of music if it is to sound like anything more than a monotonous hiss. It doesn’t surprise me that the artist does his own recording and mixing, given that his intimate relationship with his creation gives him an excellent sense of how its fragility should be handled.
This is certainly not an album for everyone (assuming that such a thing even exists). Even heard under the aforementioned ideal conditions, there are many who will find that it lacks dynamism (which it does and deliberately so) and for whom its delicate shifts will equate to a 45-minute stasis. It’s a particular sort of release for a particular sort of fan: those who appreciate the music released by Drone Records or the work of Francisco Lopez will almost certainly find something to enjoy here.
Analyze your own tastes and make your decision accordingly.

ROCKERILLA #417 Maggio 2015
by Aldo Chimenti

CHAIN D.L.K.
by Vito Cammaretta
Since the opening "First Immersion", this new release by Simon Balestrazzi sounds like the sonic report from a sort of altered state of consciousness which makes the brain experience reality as a close web of interferences, resonances, brainstem feedbacks and electromagnetic fields, an augmented perception that listeners catch as if it's inside a Faraday cage; the title of the release, which follows the last amazing act as Dream Weapon Ritual - another artistic alter-ego of former T.A.C. pulsating brain -, could let you surmise it could just be a sort of representation of technology-driven human perceptual prophylaxis by quoting ultrasonic cleansing, an electrochemical process that got extensively applied in jewellery, optics, dental and surgical cleaning and electronic musical instruments as well. The buzzing low frequency that saturates most of the release is quite similar to the noise that devices for ultrasonic cleaning usually makes, but besides undefined metallic objects, Simon seems to soak organic field recordings and foggy vocal radio broadcasts as well as a pile of instrumental parts from prepared toy psaltery, tsimblaty, tabletop guitar, horizontal steel cello, bulbul tarang, a prepared piano and even a broken metronome that appears on the meaningfully titled track "In My Own Transfigured Time" into his ultrasonic pool. The alternation of ablutions (three immersion before the last one) and three risingly hypnotical interplays ("Oscillation", "Osmosis" and the above-mentioned "In My Own Transfigured Time") seems to suggest he wisely follows a sort of gradual purification till the thirteen rarefied minutes of "Last Immersion" where the residual sonic impurities and memories keep on resounding in between cavitation bubbles.

INDUSTRIAL [r]EVOLUTION
by Giovanni Rossi

Severa e contemporanea (il piano preparato, i metronomi rotti e i processi digitali di My Own Transfigured Time).
Scivolare.
Buio - luce - buio.

THE NEW NOISE
by Maurizio Inchingoli

BLOWUP #205 Giugno 2015

In My Own Transfigured Time. (7/8)

DARKROOM MAGAZINE
